Mystery Weekend.

So a few weeks ago LSM told me to book a weekend off work as he was taking me away. I was given a vague list of things to pack and last Friday morning we set off (the sat nav didn't even have the destination written on it) After 3 hours of driving thought beautiful North East France we arrived here ...

Gerardmer in the Vosges. It was perfect. It had everything I love, hills and a lake! And a beautiful hotel! The view from the terrace was superb!

Friday afternoon was spent wandering around Gerardmer, people watching, speaking bad French and eating ice cream, which was wonderful! Oh and drinking local wine :)

So Friday was a massive success and after a huge dinner and some more local wine we hit the sack.

Saturday was beautiful. A gorgeous sunny day and a whole new place waiting to be explored!!! We hopped in the car and headed north to Xonrupt-Longemer to walk around Lac de Longemer. It was stunning. We, of course, had many sunbathing, food and beer stops :)

So the walk was beautiful, but very hot! So we headed back to the hotel before dinner. Now dinner was a bit of a trek to get to, but LSM's boss had assured us that it was the best place to go to and had already made us a reservation! And heavens was he right! Getting there was interesting though ...

So we got a little bit lost but after a hair rising drive down a dirt track we arrived at L'auberge Huss. And what a view greeted us!

L'auberge Huss is literally a dairy farm with one room full of tables. The food was all home cooked and locally produced, which made it even better!

We had four courses starting with a soup. You could guess the portion sizes were going to be huge when they brought out a pot of soup for the two of us! We had a torte with an unknown meaty filling, then a sort of gammon joint with the best mashed potatoes I have ever tasted in my life! Then there was desert, LSM chose wisely and stuck to what he knew with rhubarb tart, whereas I (ever the explorer) chose fromage blanche. I was greeted by a huge slab of curd drenched in alcoholic cream and sprinkled in sugar. Let's just say I now know not to order fromage blanche ever again! We paid the tiniest bill ever and set off with a block of their cheese and demands that we returned! Even with our terrible French and their lack of English we had the best meal ever in the most wonderful atmosphere!
Our drive back to the hotel was a stormy one but the view back towards l'auberge Huss was just stunning.

Sunday was rainy and involved a leisurely breakfast and a lazy drive back to LSM's flat in Belgium. All in all a perfect weekend!
